One Man May Shake the Country for Ten Miles
I have worked on Kensington Avenue for a little while last Spring as an SAT math tutor at Kensington High. It is one of the more desperate inner-city neighborhoods in Philly, with drug-trafficking and prostitution being the two pillars of its economy. When the government and all the rich and powerful have given up hope for redevelopment of the region, a pastor moved in with his wife and two kids to the neightborhood, with Christ's command that true shepherds should "feed [His] sheep" in mind. His name is Rev. Jim Snider, and I have only talked to him once, although he immediately struck me as a Godly man. The missionary work he does is multi-faceted. On one hand, his mission provides food for the homeless, on the other hand, he ministers to their spiritual needs.
When he was alone with his family, he led a prayerful life. When he first moved in to the neighborhood, drug addicts would inject heroin in front of his church. Thanks to the Lord, who in His tender mercy answered the good pastor's ceaseless prayers, they were soon struck by their own conscience and left. Some of them have chosen to overcome their addiction, and join the Alcoholic/Narcotic Anonymous club next door. (There is another great story about a great man that is related to this clubhouse which I will talk about in a few days.)
